Tackling My Artistic Fears

Senior Thesis Final Project

In this project, I chose to tackle my three biggest artistic “fears”: painting large, experimenting with new styles and techniques, and dealing with artist’s block and frustration. My main tool for applying paint was a palette knife (a technique I've been afraid to explore thus far!).

Before starting this project, I hadn't painted for myself in a few months. Other than school projects and commissions, I was stuck in a deep artist’s block, constantly thinking about what to paint next but never actually picking up a paintbrush.

Rather than creating, I spent my time planning a hypothetical painting, thinking I was moving forward when in reality I was simply procrastinating. I was overly focused on the final product and having a good ~idea~ that I forgot that the process of painting was my favorite part. I forgot how happy creating something makes me feel and the deep sense of satisfaction I get once I see the results of my work.
